VINCI PLC signs up to the “Construction Commitment: Halving Waste to Landfill”

On Thursday 16th October, VINCI PLC Chief Executive John Stanion attended the launch of the “Construction Commitment: Halving waste to Landfill” in Westminster. John signed up to the commitment in the presence of the likes of Nick Raynsford MP and BERR Minister Ian Pearson.

The Construction Commitment: “We commit to playing our part in halving the amount of construction, demolition and excavation waste going to landfill by 2012. We will work to adopt and implement standards for good practice in reducing waste, recycling more and increasing the use of recycled and recovered materials.”

The commitment is voluntary, whereby those involved in the construction industry can publicly commit to corporate waste reduction targets. The Government’s Strategy for Sustainable Construction clearly identifies waste as a major area for action and halving waste to landfill by 2012 is now a firmly established target for the construction sector.

The construction sector currently wastes around £1.5 billion in unused materials and sends some 25 million tonnes of waste to landfill every year. Welcoming the agreement, Environment Minister Jane Kennedy said “This agreement sends a clear message to the construction supply chain; it is time to stop the waste.”

VINCI PLC and its subsidiary companies will be setting targets for waste reduction for 2009 and beyond.
