Taylor Woodrow has begun construction on the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2008, which will give England the first built project by legendary architect Frank Gehry. The spectacular structure – designed and engineered in collaboration with Arup is anchored by four massive steel columns and is comprised of large timber planks and a complex network of overlapping glass planes that create a dramatic, multi-dimensional space.
A major milestone was reached on the eagerly awaited 16m high Pavilion yesterday as the first part of the structure was lifted into position. Two cranes were needed to simultaneously lift the30 tonne columns carefully into place, as park users gathered to see the spectacle. These will form the principle support for the Pavilion.
