Completion of UK's Biggest Building

Dec 7 2007

We have completed a new distribution centre in Livingston for Tesco, which is believed to be the largest building in the UK.

The new 1,000,000ft2 distribution centre is a mixed ambient, chilled and frozen depot with ancillary buildings servicing the whole of Scotland, on a 127 acre site.

We completed the design and build contract in just 65 weeks, with works including in excess of 1,000,000 m3 of bulk earth works, 3,730 driven piles, 3,500 tonnes of structural steel and over 38 acres of external hard standing and pavements.

The facility, which is over half a mile long, includes three large office areas and a restaurant. The project also involved extensive highways works and parking facilities for 1,000 people for two shifts.

The Distribution Centre also includes the following environmental features:

  • Extensive rooflights (in excess of 1,000m2) to maximise natural light
  • Two rainwater harvesting systems are utilised by the 9,343m2 recycling unit and the main distribution areas
  • An energy recovery tray wash hot water unit is used in the recycling unit
  • Energy efficient heat exchangers connected to the chiller plant areas are used to warm the ambient section of the distribution centre
  • A SUDs rainwater filtration system has been constructed below the car parking areas
  • A CHP biomass unit is to be built at a later date to produce all the energy requirements for the facility
